Army launched a massive search operation in a forest in Handwara area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district after exchanging brief gunfire with militants last night, police said today.

An official said that a joint team of army’s 21 RR and 9 PARA cordoned off the Bhawan village in Rajwar area of Handwara last night.

As they moved forward, the militants hiding in the area opened fire which was retaliated, triggering heavy exchange of fire which continued for about half an hour.

However, the militants escaped from the site after taking advantage of the darkness, said the official.

He added that the forces cordoned off the area today morning and started a search operation to nab the militants.
